Out-of-gauge cargo β€” anything that exceeds the standard dimensions of a container or the legal envelope of a road vehicle β€” behaves differently on every corridor. A load that moves cleanly to Lusaka may face an entirely different set of constraints on the way to Kigali. The border is different. The road is different. The permit regime is different. The delivery window is different.

Dar es Salaam is the natural gateway for landlocked East and Central Africa, and from the port six proven corridors radiate inland. This guide walks through each one from the perspective of the cargo that won't fit β€” where the pressure points sit, and what a shipper should be thinking about before the unit ever leaves the quay.

The corridor is not a line on a map. It is a sequence of bridges, weighbridges, border posts and turning radii β€” every one of which has to accept your cargo.

1. The Zambia corridor β€” via Tunduma / Nakonde

The Tunduma–Nakonde crossing is the busiest of the six and the backbone of Copperbelt trade. It serves Lusaka and the mining belt of Ndola, Kitwe and Mufulira, which makes it the primary route for mining and processing equipment. The challenge here is congestion as much as engineering: Tunduma is a high-volume border, and abnormal loads need scheduling and escort coordination so they are not caught in queues that were never designed for a 60-metre trailer. For high-mass units, axle configuration and bridge ratings along the Great North Road are the binding constraints.

2. The DRC corridor β€” via Kasumbalesa

Movements to the DRC run through Zambia and cross at Kasumbalesa into the Katanga mining region β€” Lubumbashi and Kolwezi. This is a two-border movement, which doubles the documentation and the permit coordination. Cargo destined for Congolese mine sites is typically among the heaviest and most valuable on any corridor, so security, escort and route timing matter as much as the physical clearances. The final stretch to a mine site is almost always unsealed road, and route surveys are non-negotiable.

3. The Rwanda corridor β€” via Rusumo / Gatuna

Rwanda is served through the Rusumo or Gatuna crossings, delivering into Kigali and upcountry project sites. The terrain is the story here: this is hill country, and out-of-gauge cargo has to negotiate gradient, camber and tight radii that flat-country planning simply doesn't account for. A load that is legal on width may still be impossible on a switchback. Height clearances through built-up areas need checking well in advance.

4. The Malawi corridor β€” via Kasumulu

Malawi movements cross at Kasumulu and serve Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu. The corridor is relatively direct, but bridge capacity is the recurring constraint for heavy units, and seasonal conditions can affect the road. Timing an abnormal load around the rains, and confirming that intermediate bridges will accept the axle loads, is the core of the planning work.

5. The Burundi corridor β€” via Kobero / Manyovu

Burundi is reached via the Kobero or Manyovu crossings, delivering into Bujumbura and inland sites. It is a longer inland haul, and the combination of distance, border formalities and road condition means that programme timelines need to be built with realistic contingency. As with Rwanda, terrain and clearance take priority over pure width.

6. The Uganda corridor β€” via Mutukula / Malaba

Uganda can be served through Mutukula or Malaba, reaching Kampala, Jinja and Western Uganda. Malaba is a major regional crossing with significant traffic; Mutukula offers an alternative depending on origin and destination. The choice of border is itself a planning decision for OOG cargo, driven by where the load is going and what the road can carry.

The common thread: nothing moves without a permit and a plan

Across all six corridors, the same disciplines apply. Abnormal load permits must be secured in each transit country. Escorts have to be arranged. Bridges and weighbridges have to be checked against the actual mass and axle spread of the load. And the delivery point β€” the last mile onto a site β€” is frequently the hardest part of the whole journey.
